Not too far from the college I attend sits a sort of retro store, a place by the name of That's Entertainment, a place where finding a gem of the past is almost impossible not to do. Every time I enter that that place with my paycheck cashed and my wallet fat, I find my pockets much lighter, and either a bag slung over my wrist or a huge box in my hands. Not too long ago, I was fortunate enough to walk out of there with a Japanese Sega Saturn, complete with an Action Replay to bypass the region lock, effectively letting me play any game I want. Sweet deal indeed,. However, my last visit left me with something rather different.
As usual, I waltz in, cash burning a hole in my pocket, and called out my usual "Got anything rare for me today?" Unfortunately, nothing good this time, no Sega Master System or 32X, but they did offer me something else. The clerk, a scruffy guy named Dan, asked "Do you know what an Atari 800 is?" Societal Reflections Shown in My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic
Television has been used for decades to market toys to young boys and girls. From the early days of Transformers to the current times of Yugioh and Spongebob Squarepants, plenty of children's programming has been nothing more than a means of pushing cheap toys onto easily impressionable children to make a quick buck. Sometimes however, despite whatever motive is behind the actual existence of the program, some develop astounding fan followings and manage to evolve into works with messages that rival the works of Shakespeare and Orwell. Surprisingly enough, the classic girl's program My Little Pony actually rises to this exalted level of intellect and comprehension. How is it possible that a cheaply produced show from the eighties with little to no plot designed solely to sell plastic ponies to little girls has any sense of deeper meaning beyond simple cash cow? Well it hasn't that show is simple cheap cash
Ed, Edd, n FreddyI have always been a fan of Ed, Edd, n Eddy as a kid. I remember the first time I saw it even, it was in a motel up in Maine where my family used to spend a few days every summer, munching on a bagel as I flipped through the channels, always hated having to figure out the channels up there. My parents never liked the show, called it stupid, called it dumb, but that's what cartoons are. Dumb fun.
Unfortunately, I eventually started to watch Comedy Central instead of Cartoon Network, a part of growing up I guess, forgetting all about my beloved children's shows in favor of stand-up comedy and "real shows". Though recently, I met a friend who reignited my spark in cartoon interests, and upon researching, I found that Ed, Edd, n Eddy continued much longer than when I had stopped watching, even a season revolving around school life, it was quite a nostalgia trip to say the least.
The trip didn't last for long though, after binging on you tube videos, I eventually watched them all, and that
Crown of ThornsShe wakes up with red staining her pillow
and the taste of blood like iron in her mouth
It stains her teeth and leaks from her lips, and as she
rinses her mouth out, she can’t help thinking that
it’s better than dirt and ashes
it feels like she’s wearing a noose
of broken promises and shattered glass
that tightens around her throat with every day that passes
She nails a smile to her face
and doesn't let herself think the word dying
